Pilates

Pilates is a whole-body movement system designed by Joseph Pilates that heavily emphasizes core work as a means to stabilize and strengthen the limbs and head. Though Pilates studios very often have specialized equipment, but there are plenty of at-home mat workouts you can do, too! Pilates mat classes are a blend of core work and light cardio that help you gain strength and flexibility. Like yoga, Pilates works to lengthen muscles and integrate arm and leg work as a movement system, working with the entire body as a unit instead of isolating movements to specific muscle groups. Pilates is an excellent complementary exercise system for athletes of all types, including runners, swimmers, and team sports athletes.
