Sonya Genel

Sonya Genel joyfully embraces the power of yoga not only to heal and transform the body, but also to heighten human consciousness and to create a radiant life. Sonya discovered yoga in the1990s in Boston. She began with Ashtanga yoga and power vinyasa, but as her practice evolved she gravitated more towards alignment based styles such as Anusara and Iyengar. She was not planning on becoming a yoga teacher, but after a few years the powerful benefits of her own practice compelled Sonya to share the transformative gift of yoga with others. She attended her first teacher training at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. Over the years she has completed hundreds more hours of training in Tantra and alignment based yoga, prenatal yoga, anatomy, therapeutics, and meditation. Sonya is honored and grateful to have studied with many incredible teachers such as Paul Muller Ortega, Sianna Sherman, Jill Miller, KK Ledford and Jean Mazzei. Sonya now leads public classes, workshops, trainings, and retreats in the San Francisco Bay Area. In her classes she weaves together precise anatomical alignment, flowing movement, breath work, and energetics. Sonya aims to hold a safe space for transformation, always approaching her students with authenticity and humor. When she is not teaching yoga, Sonya can be found drawing or painting. As an artists, she notices the profound effects yoga has on her creativity, and she has dedicated herself to enthusiastically guiding others toward enhancing their own unique life path through yoga.
