Stay Healthy During Daylight Savings using Ayurveda

Daylight savings time is upon us! Although the extra hour of sunlight is always an exciting shift it can temporarily wreak havoc on our daily habits and sleep cycles. Read on for Ayurvedic tips to help you stay balanced through the time change:

  •  Stick to your bedtime. According to Ayurveda, it’s important to get to sleep before your “second wind” hits around 10pm. This can be hard to do when it stays light so much later, but sleep is a key pillar to maintaining your health. If you’re having trouble settling down for bed, try one of our Restorative Yoga classes in the evening.
  • A later sunset doesn’t mean later dinners! According to Ayurveda dinner should be your lightest meal of the day and be eaten at least 3 hrs before you go to bed. This gives your body time to fully digest before you go to sleep. We understand that it can be hard to think about dinner when the sun is shining. Rather than wait for the sun to go down to eat, head outside and soak in the last few rays of the day while enjoying your evening meal.
  • If you’re feeling “off” with the time change, spend some time in the sun as close to noon as possible. Soaking in the mid-day rays will help reset your circadian rythmns to the current time.
  • Wake up and move! According to Ayurveda, spring is Kapha season, which means that you may be feeling a little heavy and sluggish. An effective way of balancing this oncoming sluggishness is by exercising (walk, yoga, tai chi … it’s all good!) first thing in the morning. Want some inspiration?
