Heartfelt Gifting on a Budget

Ghee is a clarified butter that is heated to remove water and milk solids.  Many ayurvedic recommendations call for consuming ghee along with prescribed herbs.  Carolyn Crow the COO of YogaVibes.com provides her simple take on using, making, and gifting ghee!

I use ghee daily.  It began as a simple and tasty way to ‘bulletproof’ my coffee habit when I first started doing yoga.  Then after study about my dosha (I am a physically vata constitution) I learned the benefits of ghee plus warming herbs.  A jar of store bought ghee was becoming more and more costly so after inheriting a book from my own yoga teacher (The Path of Practice by Bri. Maya Tiwari) I was inspired to take my yoga practice one step further by assuring most of what myself and my family eat is prepared by our own hands.

Below is my simple recipe for ghee.  I encourage you to experiment and find your own methods and measurements that work.  Propose a coffee or hot chocolate gathering with friends or loved ones this holiday and gift them each their own jar of ghee!

  • Melt 1-2 pounds of high quality butter on medium to low heat in a heavy bottomed sauce pan.  NOTE: Most recipes call for unsalted butter but I cannot find the minimal ingredient and high quality brand of butter I prefer unsalted so I use salted.
  • Once the butter is melted continue to stir and cook on a medium heat.  You should observe white flecks and small bubbles float to the top of your pan.
  • Continue to heat butter and you’ll notice larger solids start to come out of your clarified ghee.  Heat until solids start to turn brown.  This usually takes 15-20 minutes.
  • Allow your ghee to cool some, use a fine mesh sieve or cheese cloth as you pour your warm ghee into containers.

Ghee can be stored at room temperature for several months in an airtight container.  When I make two pounds of butter into ghee I store it in a 1 qt Ball jar (yields 4 cups).
