They asked why do I have a passion for helping veterans?

My answer was very simple and pretty honest. I was born in Havelock, NC which is home to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. My father was a Marine and years after he left the Marines decided to join the Army. He completed bootcamp and was stationed in Texas when I was eight. I remember him getting leave to come home for the birth of my brother. I also remember helping my mother in the middle of the night with my newborn brother when my father had to report back. The entire family eventually moved to Texas. We lived at Fort Sam Houston.

And even now, my future son-in-law served in the Army. Many of my friends are either still serving or have done so. Veteran health means something to me because several if not all of these people I mention sustained injuries while in service. This does not even begin to shed a light on the emotional toll of physical injury as well as the mental toll of foreign (or perhaps even domestic) engagements, loss of comrades, or simply the mentality required to repeatedly perform under pressure.

In the book, ‘The Dead Drink First’ by Dale Maharidge he recounts stories from the children of WWII veterans, his included. These children loved their fathers dearly but upon the passing of those same fathers finally came to learn all that had happened to them while in service. They recount the distance they felt, the moments of melancholy, sudden bouts of rage, even obsessiveness about rules. Almost immediately after reading that book I happened to grab one on epigenetics.

So more deeply personal and honest about why I have a passion for Veterans is that in some way, I am trying to close a gap in my family history that always puzzled me. I never met my grandfather. My grandmother divorced him when my father was a teenager. In my very early 20’s he finally passed – alone and with cirrhosis of the liver in a VA hospital…somewhere. And as much family history does repeat, I do not have a relationship with my father.

And I don’t really have an answer as to why my childhood was plagued by the same distance, moments of melancholy, sudden bouts of rage, obsessiveness about rules. There may be some common theme there between service to country, those that are drawn to it, and they way they integrate themselves into civilian life.

I do know it was a little unusual for my father to serve in both the marines and the army. Maybe he was searching for something or trying to get control of himself. He did like his rules.

This month in June, whether your experience that feels or looks like PTSD or CPTSD – started because of military service or started because of how you identify in the world or started because of something that happened to you or things you decided to do to yourself – I welcome you to begin a dialogue. We as people are Indivisible.
