Read on to see how Lillian uses Ayurvedic wisdom to nourish her joints and ditch the wrinkle cream!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The month of February is synonymous with the month of love. Thanks to Valentine&#8217;s Day we see hearts everywhere. I\u2019m all about spreading the love \u2014 whether you\u2019re partnered or not \u2014 but also feel that this month can serve as an important reminder to give <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yourself<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more love. How do we do that? With self care practices!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to self-love I turn to Ayurveda for inspiration. This 5,000+ year old science excels at teaching the importance of making self-care part of our daily routine. One of the most luxurious self care practices that Ayurveda teaches is Abhyanga or self oil massage. The Sanskrit word for oil is <em>sneha<\/em>, which also means love. So there really isn\u2019t a more appropriate way of loving yourself in my opinion!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Abhya-what?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Abhyanga<\/em> is the practice of rubbing warm oil over your whole body. It\u2019s a little giggle-worthy at first, but trust me, it\u2019s worth a try. According to Ayurvedic theory this practice is nourishing to all 3 doshas, but most specifically grounding to <em>vata<\/em>. <em>Abhyanga<\/em> is believed to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve circulation and lymphatic flow, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beneficial for both detoxification and immunity;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lubricate the joints,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say sayonara to snaps, crackles, and pops when you roll out your mat;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">settle your nervous system, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goodbye anxiety and hello restful sleep;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrate and soften skin, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not going to need that expensive wrinkle cream anymore.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7760 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yogavibes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pexels-pixabay-433626-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yogavibes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pexels-pixabay-433626-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yogavibes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pexels-pixabay-433626-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yogavibes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pexels-pixabay-433626-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.yogavibes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pexels-pixabay-433626-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.yogavibes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pexels-pixabay-433626-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>With the above list of benefits, are you ready to try it out? Here\u2019s how:\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by warming the oil. I like to warm mine by placing the glass jar in boiling water \u2014 whatever you do please don\u2019t microwave the oil!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lay out an old towel on the bathroom floor and strip down to your birthday suit.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting at the feet give yourself an oily foot rub. Make sure to get all 10 toes, bottoms of the feet, ankles, all of it! Then start to move your way up the legs. As you rub the oil into your skin (just like you would lotion) use long strokes up the limbs and circular motions on the joints. As you rub oil onto the legs and arms think about massaging in the direction toward your heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get to your stomach rub the oil in clockwise circular motions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your way to your head. Gently give yourself a scalp massage with the warm oil (your hair will be so soft the following day!). You can lightly rub oil on your face, neck, even inside the ears and nose.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once your whole body is lathered, let the oil sink into the skin for about 20 minutes. This is a great time to pull up your favorite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogavibes.com\/videos?yoga_style=896\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YogaVibes meditation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and settle.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After about 20 minutes take a warm shower to remove any excess oil on the top of the skin.\u00a0 Don\u2019t scrub or loofa here, just gently rinse. Most oils have gentle anti-microbial properties so you don\u2019t need any soap on top of the oil. Once you find an oil you love, you can stick with it. The general rule of thumb for oils is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the cold winter months use a heavy and warming oil like sesame oil or mustard oil. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the transition months (spring and fall) use a neutral oil like almond oil or sunflower oil.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you&#8217;re in the hot summer months use a cooling oil like coconut oil.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019ve made it this far \u2014 what are you waiting for?
