  • Strike A Pose: Chaturanga with Kino MacGregor

If you’re new to practice of yoga, one of the hardest poses to work on is Chaturanga Dandasana or Four-Limbed Staff Pose a.k.a. the “yoga push-up.”

    Chaturanga Dandasana

Chaturanga is a key player of the Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga methods. And for good reason. Chaturanga has ability to turn you into one lean, mean yogi machine. This pose builds strength and lots of it!  Keep practicing Chaturanga and you’re bound to develop more strength in your wrists, arms, shoulders, chest, core, and even in your inner thighs if you’re engaging them correctly.

Yet, the full expression of Chaturanga Dandasana is quite tricky to perform at first, until your arms, back, and legs are tough enough to tackle it.

How do you build that toughness?

Start off easy in Kino MacGregor’s free online yoga video, designed to help you build the strength needed to master Chaturanga.

In this beginner yoga video, Kino will share some good techniques, alignment cues, and modifications to help you safely practice Chaturanga Dandasana. This is one of the hardest postures in the Ashtanga Yoga method for beginners, but don’t you fear. You got this. Begin this online yoga class in a nice solid plank and work from there! You might just surprise yourself!

  • Yoga for Holiday Stress Relief

    crow pose bakasana

    The holidays can be berzerk.

Makin' lists upon lists. Checkin’ them twice.

You’ve got things to do. Places to be. People to please.

That's all well and good, but you better watch out because...

Overwhelm-tion is coming to town and it’s bringing its buddy stress along for the ride.

Well, only if you allow it.

You don’t have to let the frenzied festivities get you fa-la-la-la-la-ing apart.

Some words of advice on how to deal with stress:

    • Inhale. Exhale. Repeat. Over and over and over again...
    • Know that it will all get done. Maybe not exactly as you envisioned it. But in some way.
    • Release your expectations of others (family, friends, strangers).
    • Don’t let others bring you down. Let their challenges be their challenges.
    • Release your expectations of how your think the holidays should be. Let them just be.
    • Release memories of past holidays. They don’t exist. They are just thoughts. Let them go and live fully in the moment, free from the past.
    • Practice gratitude - the highest yoga.
    • Give love - the greatest gift.
    • Give without expecting to get anything in return.
    • Meditate often. When your surroundings are wild, you can choose to go to an inward place of harmony and peace. If you need some guidance, we have a lovely collection of free online yoga videos in our Strike A Pose section, featuring simple meditation techniques.

And last but not least, get your overworked hiney to the mat for Olynda Smith’s online yoga video: Erase the Effects of Stress.

Mat time is most definitely a solid way to help you release holiday stress from your body, heart, and mind. In this online yoga flow, you’ll create space, physically and emotionally, through a mindful, alignment-focused practice to invite in greater harmony and calm. Start this online yoga class with a strong standing pose sequence, play with preparations for the arm balance Koundinyasana II, and wrap up with some backbending and hip opening. (89 mins.)
