  • Strike A Pose: Hanumanasana (Yoga Splits!)

Ready to stretch it out? Like really stretch it out?

Well, here’s your online yoga opportunity to bend it like it's hot.

Tune into Kino MacGregor’s free online yoga video demoing Hanumanasana - the Yoga Splits - a movement that is introduced in the Ashtanga Yoga Third Series and is meant as a preparation for deep backbends.

In this online yoga video you will explore the traditional way to enter and exit the yoga splits in Ashtanga Yoga.

Instead of just hanging out in the posture - as is oftentimes the case - you will practice the splits in combination with a full Vinyasa and conscious breathing.

In doing so, you will build strength and structural integrity, cultivate a deep connection to your core, and create more openness in your hips to bring more energy into the pelvis.

Be careful and conscious about over-stretching. Don't try this unless you are open enough and have enough body intelligence. If you are ready and open, don’t rush the process! Proceed cautiously and consciously without force or strain. And most importantly, keep breathing!

    Chaturanga Dandasana

Chaturanga is a key player of the Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga methods. And for good reason. Chaturanga has ability to turn you into one lean, mean yogi machine. • Strike A Pose: Camel Pose with Sarah Ezrin

This week’s featured Strike-A-Pose yoga video is brought to you by the lovely Sarah Ezrin of Los Angeles, California. In this free online yoga video, Sarah will offer tips on how to strike backbends safely using Camel Pose (Ustrasana) to demonstrate.

    Keyword: Extension.

In other words, less backbending and more spinal lengthening.

In fact, “backbend” is sort of a misnomer. The intention in backbends is really to create spinal length. Creating a long line of energy through the spine helps to avoid any crunching or compression of the lumbar spine, which can over time, lead to lower back pain and injury. No good. So, you really want to go for a longer lower back and feel that lift coming from the upper back.

Tune in to find more extension in your backbends. Take your time. Feel more lift. And then...only then...begin to arch up and over intelligently and safely.
